I would exchange most of my talents to be able to sing…sigh.
When God Gave Me You
One day…I will sing this song to my wife.
Double Positive
- Linguistic Professor: "In English, a double negative forms a positive. In some languages, though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative."
- Voice from the back of the room: "Yeah . . .right."
Serendipity
Viagra was originally created and researched as treatment for hypertension and angina pectoris. Instead, researchers discovered it could stimulate penile erections. Today, Viagra is a popular drug marketed to treat erectile dysfunction. Despite the apparent exposure it obtains, the nature of this incident is not exclusive only to scientific breakthroughs. Serendipity, the instance of making a fortunate discovery by accident, can be encountered by anyone.
Throughout our lives, we have searched painstakingly to fill a familiar void experienced during our endless pursuit towards happiness. It is difficult to believe there is a single person, among those reading, that has not, at least once, sought to be popular, to look better, or as we get older, be loved. Initially, we return with nothing but profound damaging view of ourselves. Surprisingly, we often find what we are looking for when we stop searching. In my twenty year past, I’ve seen countless friends suffering through breakups in disbelief as they struggle to repair the relationship that has been shattered. Unfortunately, this mindset became the end for one of my classmates during my last year in high school.
To those coping with severed relationships, we’ve heard and said it all: There’s plenty of fish in the sea. Time heals all. However, my favorite one comes from Alexander Graham Bell, the creator of the telephone. He said, “When one door closes, another opens. But we often look so regretfully upon the closed door that we don’t see the one that has opened for us.” What makes this quote a bar higher than the rest is that it speaks two basic truths. The first, “When one door closes, another opens” affirms and encourages that there is hope in the future. The second, “But we often look so regretfully upon the closed door that we don’t see the one that has opened for us” reflects the obstacle of holding on too strongly to the past. You can try your best to mend what’s broken; but like dealing with broken glass, it’s better to let it be than get hurt trying fix it. Letting go doesn’t make you a quitter, it just means you’ve accepted the fact that some things are just not meant to be.
And remember, God has a plan for you.
